Athletic Coaching Online Courses

Coaching is not just about wins and losses, game schedules, play calling and the X’s and O’s, although that does matter. A coach is many things. If handled correctly, a coach is a role model, a life teacher and an inspiration.

Coaches have a responsibility to use their platform to teach valuable lessons about character development, respect and sportsmanship.

Unlike other forms of teaching, coaches have a dual role – to make their athletes achieve on and off the field or court. To add a third component, coaches are mentors who can use their respective platforms to teach valuable life lessons. At Dominican University of California our courses aim to help coaches with the essential steps to be a more influential role model. Our focus is on teaching life lessons through athletics.

The successful coach is a man or woman that brings out the best in their student athletes. It can be performance on the football field, the baseball diamond or the basketball court. It is about molding young athletes to become the best they can be in life and in the classroom.

Coaching for success

Successful coaching is about identifying objectives and reaching goals.
The best coaches are skilled motivators. They apply psychological principles and recommendations for positive management of athletes’ behavior and health.

Knowing the skills required for each sport is as important as knowing how to teach and shape those skills.

Coaches enrolled in our programs will become more effective instructors as they learn the proper approaches to teaching technical and tactical skills, a proven method of helping athletes become smart tactical players of their sports.

Team management responsibilities include relationships with athletes, other coaches, administrators, officials and parents.

Importance of nutrition and fitness

To be a successful coach involves a philosophy. But it also involves learning about proper fitness and nutrition, a proper mindset and proper communication. It is about instilling in students the notion that they can be the best. This can start by promoting health and fitness.

Sport coaches have paradoxical attitudes towards addressing health promotion as a part of their coaching practice. Health is recognized as an important factor, but not greatly invested in. Studies have shown that there is a need for youth sports coaches to invest more in health promotion activities.

How big a role does nutrition play in the performances of athletes? There are many facts and myths related to how nutrition helps or hinders how athletes perform. Information concerning nutrition should be presented so that it can help the student athlete perform at their natural ability.

It is important to develop a performance-based eating program for your specific sport. It is also up to anyone in a coaching position to examine a style of teaching/coaching that enables a coach to share with their student athletes what a young, growing person should eat.

A holistic approach to athletic coaching

A holistic approach to coaching can encourage an attitude towards fitness that will help bring a lifetime of health and happiness to the athlete. Coaches need to develop fitness training programs that will help athletes on the playing field as well as in life’s arena. It also means learning how to encourage a lifelong mental and physical health focus.

Coaches and athletic directors must also know how to spot signs and use their knowledge about drugs and drug abuse to help the athlete if a problem is suspected. It means understanding nutrition that equates to success on and off the field and court.

Great coaches set high standards

For coaches to use their status to effectively combine athletics with life lessons, a coach must establish a climate that promotes fairness and respect, much like classroom management.

Our courses focus on establishing and maintaining standards for student behavior and using a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to students’ diverse needs. Our courses take you through real-life scenarios to prepare you to better handle situations as they arise.
