Course Overview

Welcome to EDUO 9906 Building Relationships with District Personnel and the Community. This class was created as part of a three-course series entitled, Becoming a More Effective Teacher Association/Union Representative. The three courses in this series are:

• EDUO 9904 Becoming a More Effective Teacher Association/Union Representative: Understanding your Role
• EDUO 9905 Becoming a More Effective Teacher Association/Union Representative: Working Effectively with Teachers and School Administrators
• EDUO 9906 Becoming a More Effective Teacher Association/Union Representative: Building Relationships with District Personnel and the Community

This series is designed to help Association/Union representatives develop the skills needed to become an effective leader in their assigned role. The content learned in this series, Becoming a More Effective Teacher Association/Union Representative, will help representatives understand their role, become a support for teachers in their building, and discover ways to work in partnership with their school, district and the community.

Although Building Relationships with District Personnel and the Community is NOT a prerequisite for the other two courses, it does provide information that will increase your effectiveness in your role as a Teacher Association/Union Representative.

Course Objectives

In this course participants will have an opportunity to:

1. Understand how their role as a Teacher Association/Union Representative relates to the interactions they have with district personnel and the community.
2. Plan and outline their year-long communication with teachers, the district and the community that will build a positive perception of the Teacher Association/Union.
3. Read and reflect on articles related to building a positive perception of the Teacher Association/Union with district personnel and within the community.
4. Create a project that would build teacher/administrator/district support for the work Teacher
Associations/Unions do.
5. Reflect on the work they did to build relationships and promote understanding of the role of the Teacher Association/Union within the district and community

Course Assignments

Course assignments will consist of articles, written responses to questions, and written reflections.
Examples of assignments for this class are:

• Reflect on the current perception of the Teacher Association/Union by district personnel and the
community.
• Read and reflect on two articles related to building relationships and creating a positive perception of the Teacher Association/Union by district personnel and the community
• Plan and develop various forms of communication you will have with district personnel and the
community in order to build relationships and create a positive perception of the Teacher Association/Union.
• Design a project that will help build relationships and create a positive perception of the Teacher
Association/Union by district personnel and the community.

Write a 2-3 page reflection of the work you did to build relationships and promote understanding of the role of the Teacher Association/Union within the district and community
