Continuing education (CE) is a vital part of nearly every teacher’s career. Not only does it keep a teacher current in their own development, it satisfies state requirements for license renewal. The numbers vary by state as far as time frame and credits needed, but a common license renewal requires at least six graduate credits or 75 professional development hours every five years. In addition, continuing education can be a key element toward moving up the salary scale and/or increasing eligibility for promotion. At Dominican University we offer hundreds of professional development courses, ranging from one to six credit hours each. Three-credit courses for teachers are some of our most popular, both because they allow students to dig more deeply into a desired subject and because they help accomplish those CE credits more quickly.

Q. Are Dominican’s 3-credit courses all graduate-level?

A. Yes. All credit is post-baccalaureate, graduate-level credit. It is suitable for professional-development or salary-advancement requirements. The Continuing Education and Professional Development division of The School of Liberal Arts and Education is responsible for all the courses listed on this website.

Q. How many 3-credit courses are available at Dominican?

A. We offer more than 70 online three-credit teacher continuing education courses, ranging across a variety of needs and subjects. If desired, some can be taken for fewer or more credits, but three-credit courses for teachers online continue to be our most popular.

Q. For veteran teachers who have taken many CE courses over the years, can you highlight your newest 3-credit courses?

A. At the top right of this page, where it says “Sort by,” you can click on “All,” “Popular,” and “New.” Clicking on “New” will show you such classes as Developing Executive-Function Skills in the Primary Classroom (EDUO 9243), Enhanced Flipped Learning (EDUO 9057), Social Emotional Learning in Practice (EDUO 9971), The Art & Science of Emotional Intelligence (EI/EQ) In Mind (EDUO 9972), Personalized Learning (EDUO 9174), STEM/STEAM in the Primary Classroom (EDUO 9245), and Teaching for Retention (EDUO 9978). We’ve also added a virtual Vietnam Visit class (EDUO 9992), which covers history, geography, economics, culture, and tourism and is an addition to our Visiting Virtually courses, which include Germany (EDUO 9993) and Chile (EDUO 9682).

Q. How do I find the specific courses that will give me a certain number of credits?

A. Down the left-hand side of our web page, under Credits, we classify courses by number of credits, one through six. Clicking on a number will take you to all the qualifying courses offered. Some courses are available for different numbers of credits depending on the coursework you do. The EDUX Summer Course, Powerful Possibilities: Navigating Your 2021-2022 School Year (EDUX 9955), for example, can be taken for two to six credits. Two credits require 50 hours of logged work; three credits require 75 hours; four credits require 100 hours; five credits require 125 hours; and six credits require 150 hours.

Q. I want to take a different kind of 3-credit course, something that’s really creative. What are my options?

A. Are you interested in technology? Try Getting Up to Speed with Cool Tech Tools (EDUO 9107), in which you’ll learn more about the use of blogs, cloud documents, digital presentations, and publications, or Video Toolbox (EDUO 9153), where you’ll expand your tools, knowledge and ideas for integrating video into your classroom. Are you a hands-on sort of teacher? Consider taking Implementing a Maker Space in your School (EDUO 9871), which encourages learning and play through a combination of science, arts, technology, and crafts. Or check out Bringing Adventure to the Classroom; Sparking the Mind into Authentic Learning (EDUO 9763), which explores the Adventure Model of teaching and how it can be applied to everyday classrooms.

Q. I’m interested in specific faculty members. Can course offerings be sorted by the professor teaching them?

A. Yes! Go to the “About” drop-down menu at the top right of this page and click on “Instructors.” You’ll see an alphabetical list of our faculty, with their educational qualifications. You can click on a teacher’s name for more information, or click on “Courses” by a specific individual to see what he or she teaches.

Q. I might be interested in 1-credit or 2-credit courses. Can you direct me?

A. Sure. For one-credit courses, click here. For two-credit courses, click here.

Q. Are all Dominican courses fully online?

A. Yes, all our classes are online and self-paced.

Q. What is the cost for a 3-credit course?

A. The majority of Dominican’s three-credit courses have an enrollment fee of $447, or $149 per credit hour, though the range is from $̧327 to $596.

Q. Is Dominican University fully accredited?

A. Yes. Dominican University of California is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
