EDUO 9357: Fixing Education – One Step at a Time

Course Overview

The world of education has become extremely challenging over the past few years. From teacher shortages to the mental health crisis, both educators and students are struggling. The reform needed to fix such problems is often impractical and can take years! We do not have the time to wait. By implementing practical ideas and strategies incrementally, educators can continuously improve each issue and ultimately make a big shift. Through powerful readings, dynamic discussions, and hands-on projects, educators will walk away from this workshop ready to tackle educations biggest challenges, one step at a time.

Course Objectives

In this course, participants will have the opportunity to:

• Discuss and reflect on the biggest challenges facing education today.

• Learn practical ideas and strategies that will help address education’s biggest challenges.

• Participate in lessons, activities, and projects that are designed to demonstrate how to create classrooms and schools that will improve both student and educator outcomes.

• Demonstrate the ability to create curriculum and learning environments that supports student engagement, behavior, and social-emotional skills while reducing educator burn out and increasing teacher retention.

Listen to what the Summer 2023 participants had to say:

“This course was exceptional in everything that it offered. The creativity, flexible thinking, and empathy aspects of the class is something I will carry out in my classroom now” – Matthew Torrez, ELA Teacher – Chink Valley Unified School District

“I just finished a very challenging school year and needed a little, “Chicken Soup for the Teacher Soul”, , and this course was exactly that”. Jennifer Smith, 7th grade math teacher – Anne Arundel County (Maryland).

“I’m leaving this class feeling like I developed as an educator and a human being. It was worth every moment”. Aidan Gutierrez – 6th grade Ethnic Studies and 7th grade English – Castro Valley Unified School District.

“This is by far the best class that I have ever taken. I learned so many amazing strategies and ideas that I can take back to my classroom to help my students succeed.” – Brittney Gonzales, Home Base Virtual Teacher – Chino Valley Unified School District.

“Like most teachers who must endure their mandatory, inane professional development, I entered the class with doubtful skepticism but exited with enthusiastic optimism.” – Darren Pagtakhan, English Teacher – Pleasanton Unified School District.
