EDUO 9094: Educating for the Real World

Course Overview

For this generation of students to find success in an unpredictable world full of complex problems, we need to shift our priority away from grades and test scores. Instead, an emphasis should be put on helping students become flexible thinkers who can effectively communicate while collaborating to solve problems in creative ways. Through powerful readings, dynamic discussions, and hands-on projects, educators will walk away from this workshop ready to help students build the critical thinking and interpersonal skills necessary to thrive in the real world.

Course Objectives

In this course, participants will have the opportunity to:

• Discuss and reflect on educating students for the real world.

• Develop an understanding of what skills students must learn to be successful adults.

• Participate in lessons, activities, and projects that are designed to demonstrate how to create classrooms that improve interpersonal skills while teaching critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, and flexible thinking.

• Demonstrate the ability to create curriculum and learning environments that prepare students for the real world.

Listen to what the Summer 2022 participants had to say:

“I love that every time I take a course with you guys, I learn something that I will for sure take back and utilize in my classroom.” – Andrea Baerga, 5th grade teacher in Chino Valley Unified School District.

“I am leaving this course with so much! From ready-to-go lessons to long-term and short-term goals. I have learned so much more about myself and I am leaving with pockets full of ideas and a heart bursting with excitement and love for the work ahead of me” – Julia Salvader, teacher Sunnyvale Elementary School District.

“I would definitely take another version of this workshop. I loved that it was online, but still built a community and safe space with lots of sharing and group work” – Claire Prestridge, English Teacher in Capistrano Unified School District.

“This course was part of my self-care journey as an educator!” – Natalie Birkholz, middle school science teacher in Walnut Creek Intermediate School District.

“This course left me feeling refreshed because I was able to reflect on my “why” and get back to my core vision and purpose for education!” – Kate Pace, Art teacher in Weld Re-4 School District.
