At Dominican University of California our Online Special Education Courses for Teachers (https://dominicancaonline.com/online-courses/special-education/) are geared toward learning how to honor diversity in the classroom and embrace neurodiverse students who learn, think, and behave differently. Our goal is to help teachers better understand the unique needs of the students in their classrooms.
Neurodiversity in the Classroom
Neurodiversity in the Classroom (https://dominicancaonline.com/courses/eduo-9406-neurodiversity-classroom/) was created in conjunction with Educational Development and Services as part of a six course series entitled Strength-Based Teaching and Learning.
Diversity in education also applies to neurodiversity and special needs such as autism. Just as we celebrate diversity in cultures, so too do we need to honor the diversity of students who learn, think and behave differently.
Strength-based strategies are needed to help students with special needs. Autism is just one example, but it is one of the most common, impacting 1 in every 68 children in the United States.

This series is designed to help teachers and schools embrace the strengths of such neurodiverse students in order to help them thrive in school and beyond.
The content learned in the class, Neurodiversity in the Classroom, will afford you the knowledge necessary to create strength-based classrooms and schools where students with disabilities flourish alongside their typically developing peers. By meeting the requirements of this class, participating teachers will earn one semester unit of graduate level extension credit from Dominican University of California, a fully accredited university.
We focus on the talents of the learning disabled. That means the embrace of ADHD, autism and the joy it can bring, the strengths of intellectually disabled students and the bright sides of emotional behavior disorders.
The inclusive classroom
An inclusive classroom means treating all students equally. We will help you organize a plan to do this.
For teachers, inclusion can be done by reflecting on what impact their own culture has on their instruction and how they approach educating students with vastly different backgrounds. An inclusive classroom requires recognizing stereotypes and prejudice and a focus on incorporation and integration. Putting emotional needs first is paramount to success.
To accomplish this, schools and teachers need to provide a welcoming experience for all students, not just those who struggle, so that effective classroom strategies can be successfully employed.
The successful inclusion of students with special needs into the general education classroom is tough, but absolutely possible. It requires a collaborative partnership. It should be formed between the regular classroom teacher and the special education teacher. Extensive and ongoing planning are required.
Planning means taking the first steps, along with teacher colleagues, to complete an inclusion plan that will enhance your educational program and add to your knowledge and skills.
As a part of the teacher/student process you will collaborate with colleagues and parents to adapt the physical and instructional environment.
You will review classroom management techniques and learn how to find new resources and develop relevant assessment tools.
Students with disabilities are also subject to specific legal discipline procedures that do not apply to all students campus-wide. There are steps that must be taken when dealing with students with disabilities.
We will teach you how to understand the laws that pertain to your state.
